Jul 27, 2015 Nuvi1490: Is my SD card slot broken?? MoroseUK 0 Points. July 2015 in Garmin Auto Forum (Garmin Nuvi. But when I connect the nuvi to my laptop via USB, then the nuvi appears as a drive ('GARMIN') in Windows, but the SD card does not. Tutorial on how to use a Garmin Nuvi 255 255W 265 265W GPS Navigation System. Garmin nuvi 30 40 & 50.
I have a nuvi1490, and a strong suspicion that the microSD slot is not working.
I have two microSD cards (8Gb and 32Gb) that are recognised by Windows when I put the cards directly into my laptop (using a microSD to SD adaptor). They both appear as a removeable drive in Windows. They are both FAT32 formatted.
However, when I put the cards into my nuvi, not only does the nuvi not recognise the card, but when I connect the nuvi to my laptop via USB, then the nuvi appears as a drive ('GARMIN') in Windows, but the SD card does not.
Having browsed other posts with SD card issues, it seems like most people at least get a second removable drive in Windows for the microSD when they connect their nuvi. I don't even get this.
Any ideas? Am I correct the microSD slot on my nuvi is probably broken?
Thanks!
Martin

- It is rare to see an SD slot fail on the Nuvi. What is more common is that the Nuvi simply doesn't recognize the maps or other data you have on the card, often because the data isn't in the correct format, and then simply ignores the card.
What data do you have on the card? Or what are you hoping to use it for? - One card has some Garmin map data on it from a previous EU maps update which I now think never worked because of this SD card issue. The other (32Gb) is empty. The internal storage is now full with the latest EU maps, and I wanted to add North America maps ahead of a road trip I'll be doing shortly.
- This may sound stupid but I
used my 1490 for months thinking that the SD card was broken when it was actually fine. My problem was that I was inserting the card up side down.
I would suggest you take the card out of the 1490, turn it over and try to insert it again. If it inserts with little resistance then your problem will probably be resolved. - thanks for the advice - I also wondered this, but have checked against where you can see the contacts inside the slot - I'm putting it in the right way round. The other way is a real challenge as well!
- The 'right way around' maybe but is it the right way up. I don't have my 1490 any more but if I recall the SD card slot is on the side of the unit. When you insert the card in the slot are the gold/silver connectors on the card facing you or are they facing away from you? I think this is where I ran into the problem as I assumed the connectors should face away from me but in fact they should have been facing me when I inserted the card. It's been awhile so it may be the other way around but I know it wasn't obvious from the start which way the card was to be installed and I probably went the better part of a year without an SD card working before I turned the card around and solved my problem. :)
- You could try a hard reset of your device. It probably won't help but is worth a try. Be sure to back up your favorites and saved routes first.
- Yes - with the screen facing me, the connectors are facing up. That's what I meant when I it's possible to see the orientation of the contacts inside to show this is the right way up. For sure I'm not trying to push the card in without the connectors going into the machine first, which is the only way to put it in the wrong way round other than what you explained!
Garmin also recommended a hard reset, so I tried that but no help.
I think I'm concluding that it's dead... - Everything you've said leads me to the same conclusion. :)
- edited July 2015Does it click into place when you insert it? It should lie flush with the slot. If it is then I agree with Boyd and yourself, it's almost certainly dead.
- Does your Nuvi 1490 take a standard SD card or Micro?
If it's a standard and you have to put your Micro card in an adapter then the adapter may be at fault.
I realize you have two adapters and it seems unlikely both with fail even though Windows recognizes them.
Are both adapters from the same company and did they ever work in the 1490?
I've experienced defective adapters before where Windows recognized but not in the device.
I think it's possible the SD card contacts are not making full contact on the SD Card Reader inside the Nuvi.
Why not try inserting it (SD card) into the Nuvi and then connect to your PC. Next take your fingernail or a thin plastic strip and insert it at the BOTTOM of the SD card pushing it slightly upward bringing the contacts closer. Do this while watching the PC screen to see if the card now appears.
Another option, although risky, is to open the case and look at the card reader if it's easily accessed. Here you may be able to put some pressure on the SD card to see if it is recognized. I don't recomend this and in doing so you could damage your Nuvi.
Since the maps are always getting larger and you're running out of internal memory a SD card will be needed unless you install only a portion of the available map.
sussamb, thanks for the clarification, we can rule out the SD adapter being at fault now. It's a micro in a 1400 series ...
I think either the Micro card is not making good contact with the Nuvi's card reader contacts or the card reader has gone bad with circuitry problems to the main board..- You are lucky it is a European 1490 which means it should have 4 GB of internal memory. So the device can hold a significant map region and still be useful. If it was a North America 1490 it would have only 2 GB of internal memory, and not having the SD slot would be very debilitating.
- Hi all, thanks for the advice and tips.
I'm not keen to open the case, so I think it's time to replace. After 5-6 years that's not so bad...
Does Garmin Nuvi 40 Have Sd Slot
Where is the slot on the device? I can't find it.

- I don't have a 50 but the slot is generally around the edge of the nuvi, bear in mind it's a micro sd slot, so not that large
Looking from the back side of the Nuvi, it's at the lower right corner, just above the lower right case screw. (About 1' to the right of the power cord jack.)I just bought my 1st gps; a 50LM. Everything is new for me. The Owner's Manual states (page 17) 'The device supports microSD and micro SDHC memory or data cards. Insert a memory card into the slot on the device.'
